Walken Around The Christmas Tree

He's a real pet lover... "We have domesticated many animals, but cats seem to have retained a sense of the forest. Their cleanliness is famous. They have grace in so many ways. From the tintinnabulation of their walk, to the way they tend to leave a small amount of food in the bottom of their bowl in what looks to me like an offering. Their self assurance and ability to articulate their needs to us with such clarity and insistence. They pose for us as naturally as Garbo because they are entitled to." -- Christopher Walken

Walk on the Wild Side

THE CATS MEOW: THE CATS THE STAR

A melodrama staring Jane Fonda among others. The most interesting part of the film is the opening title sequence, (by Saul Bass), where a black tom strolls nonchalantly around before picking a fight with a white cat. The slow tracking shots serve to emphasize the grace and majesty of the cat, which is shockingly juxtaposed with the viciousness and brutality of the fight, revealing the cat as a the truly wild animal it really is, as opposed to the pet we would like to believe we own.

Location: The Doll House, a 1930's New Orleans bordello.
Despite Walk on the Wild Side's scandalous story, the film adaptation's title song has become something of a gospel standard.

SCIENCE OF CATS

More than 600 million claim residence in households across six continents ... and now they may have dethroned dogs as the most popular pet on earth. An exterminator, fierce hunter and favorite companion, aloof and affectionate at the same time, the cat leapt out of the wood and adopted us on its own terms thousands of years ago. But how did man and beast form their unconventional relationship?

Most unusual relationship Fum and Gebra

And you thought cats only ate birds?      Dinner?
Publicity Postcard for the Fight of the Century:  "That's what they called the epic fight in 1916 between Mr Jinxie, the American fighting cat, and the German dachsund, Ludwig von Breslau-Menken. In the cruel sport of animal fighting these two were the champions in the light weight category. Because of the the Great War and growing concerns by Humane Societies about these fights, it was held at a neutral site, Berne, Switzerland. Gamblers came in large numbers from the US and Germany. Animal Rights advocates showed up and began street protests outside the fight venue."

Cat Discrimination

We’re just a week from Halloween, which means that owners of black cats across the country are starting to keep a nervous eye on their loving pets, lest they be subjected to holiday-inspired pranks. Around this time of year, says University of California, Berkeley, black cats “can be associated with bad luck and witches,” a prejudice that persists not just for a few months in the fall, but actually has important consequences year-round for the fates of these felines. People ascribe certain personality traits to cats of different colors, a bias that skews adoption rates and leaves some cats—particularly black ones—in the lurch.

Surveying cat owners, Mikel Delgado and colleagues found that people are “more likely to assign positive personality traits to orange cats and less favorable ones to white and tortoiseshell ones. Orange cats were largely regarded as friendly, white cats as aloof and tortoiseshell cats as intolerant.”

Señor Wences

Wenceslao Moreno (April 17, 1896 -- April 20, 1999)  better known as Señor Wences, was a Spanish ventriloquist. His popularity grew with his frequent appearances on CBS-TV's Ed Sullivan Show in the 1950s and 1960s.
Wences was known for his speed, skill, and grace as a ventriloquist. His stable of characters included Johnny, a childlike face drawn on Wences' hand, which he would place atop an otherwise headless doll and with whom Wences conversed while switching his voices between Johnny's falsetto and his own voice at amazing speed.

Born in Spain, Wences became famous as a ventriloquist through his repeated appear-ances on The Ed Sullivan Show, where his act typically includ-ed a puppet face made from his hand, and a disembodied head in box that growled ¬ìS¬awright.¬ He became a pop-cultural icon in later years, with references to his act cropping up in TV shows such as Scooby-Doo, South Park and The Simpsons. He died in 1999, three days after his 103rd birthday. A section of 54th Street in New York, just around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theater, is named Senor Wences Way in his honor."

RIP: Andy Griffith, 86

A Face in the Crowd

In 1957′s A Face in the Crowd,  directed by Elia Kazan, Griffith plays a likeable Arkansas drifter who becomes a radio personality known as Lonesome Rhodes. Rhodes offers homespun homilies and tunes on his guitar to the masses, who adore him. As his fame increases, he moves into television and becomes a political kingmaker–and an egotistical, power-mad man.   It is a fine film with a stunning performance by Griffith, and a theme that still resonates today–that power and fame can and do corrupt.  It’s a film definitely worth seeking out if you’ve never seen it.

LONESOME George, the last Pinta Island giant tortoise

"Lonesome George's legacy will be an increased effort in both research and management to restore his island of Pinta and all of the other giant tortoise populations of Galapagos," it said.
The Galapagos Islands, situated about 1000km off Ecuador's coast, are considered a haven for tortoises.
There are about 20,000 giant tortoises left in the Galapagos, according to the park's website. They are believed to be able to live up to the age of 200.
The Galapagos gained fame when Charles Darwin visited in 1835 to conduct landmark research that led to his revolutionary theories on evolution.
The archipelago has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 for the rich plant and animal life found both on its land and in the surrounding sea.
In 2007, the organisation declared the island chain's environment endangered due to the increase of tourism and the introduction of invasive species.

What I Saw June 15, 2012

it was a warm pre summer night in beautiful santa Barbara California. my father and I were talking about my future of how i wanted to become a pilot in the National Guard. As we were talking i decided to look up at the stars and noticed something odd. At exactly 9:33 pm i saw what seemed like a triangle of lights flying smoothly through the sky. it was arranged in a perfect series of seven lights forming a triangle and the lights were not blinking like normal planes or jets.  they were just at a constant rest point.  i have never seen that in my life.  at this point i thought it was a stealth jet, but it looked way to big. i told my father to look, i begged him but he didnt see it. I can only wonder what this strange flying object was.           Alex Fowler

Stephen Colbert’s tribute to Maurice Sendak
Yesterday, we lost another great, as beloved author and illustrator Maurice Sendak passed away at 83 from complications of a recent stroke. The creator of Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen and many other children’s favourites appeared on The Colbert Report back in January to discuss Stephen Colbert’s ambition to become a celebrity author of children’s literature in a segment called Grim Colberty Tales. Sendak’s blunt, cranky answers were hilarious, and made him one of the more memorable guests to appear on the show in some time.

for the birds

April 20, 2012: Birds strike Joe Biden's plane as it lands in California; nobody hurt.  It's not clear what kind of birds collided with the giant Boeing 757. Biden was in Santa Barbara for a fundraiser.

And a bird also interfered with Hillary Clinton's plane while she was flying from Brussels to Paris. NBC’s Pete Williams reports.

KEYT:  Air Force Two, a modified Boeing 757, was inspected for damage and departed Santa Barbara for an undisclosed location Saturday morning.
